Holly Gillott Triumphs at Hickstead

The Wymeswold showjumper Holly Gillott produced a faultless display to earn victory in the Bunn Leisure Derby Trial at the prestigious Equestrian.com Hickstead Derby.

The 26-year-old rider, competing on Dougie Douglas, went clear in both the first round and the jump-off of the 1.60m class, completing the course around Hickstead's famous arena in 61.72 seconds to claim top spot, 0.96 seconds ahead of Nations Cup team-mate Harriet Nuttall.

Gillott said: "It's the best ring in the world to ride in by a mile, my horse was loving it.

"Although I was last to go I hadn't seen anyone else, so I just did what I thought would be good enough and luckily it was, just.

"I definitely went out there with the intention of winning it.I've been saving Douglas quite a bit for the Nations Cup so it was nice just to be able to go out there and do it illottfor myself and just go for it."

Victory in the Derby Trial qualified Gillott and Dougie Douglas for the showpiece event, the Hickstead Derby, but Gillott opted not to take her top horse forward.

Holly is hoping she will return to Hickstead with Dougie Douglas for the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup next month, especially after they paired together to help Great Britain take victory, in Rome, in May.

"He won't jump again this week," said Gillott."He's just had a week off out in the field and a week hacking, so he's not mega fit.

"He'll go to the Great Yorkshire Show next where he's been second twice and the Global Champions Tour in London I hope we'll be here for the Nations Cup, but you don't know, anything can happen. He's shown good form so we hope so," she added.

Holly did compete again at Hickstead, riding the Speed Derby on JB's Hot Stuff, finishing fourth.
