Team GB's Racesafe Junior Rider squad have made a strong start to their 2017 campaign at the European Championships in Millstreet, Ireland, as they hold a gold medal position after the first day of competition.
Pathfinder for the Racesafe Juniors - and 2016 team bronze medallist - Richard Coney put in a fantastic test this morning to score 40.3 penalties on his own nine year old gelding Kananaski placing them third out of the 38 combinations competing today.
Team mate Phoebe Locke (pictured) and Jamie-lee Day’s Union Fortunus produced an incredible score of 38.5 during the early afternoon session propelling them into overnight second place and 3.6 penalties behind the current leader Antonia Baumgart and Little Rose 9 for Germany. The impressive performances from the two team riders sees GB at the top of the table in the team competition and 6.4 penalties ahead of Germany in second.
The individual riders; Holly Needham and her own Strike A Pose (48.4 pen) and Sasha Hargreaves and Playtime NZPH (52.1 pen), also got their competition off to a flying start and sit in 13th and 22nd place respectively.
Remaining team riders Imogen White (Emill) and Bubby Upton (Rachael Upton’s Eros DHI) take to the dressage arena today for the conclusion of the first phase before cross country day on Saturday 22nd July.
