Millstreet in Ireland is to host the FEI European Eventing Championship for Young Riders and Juniors in 2017.
Millstreet was allocated the event by the FEI Bureau at its meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Tuesday. The dates of the event are to be confirmed.
Ireland won team gold in the Junior European Eventing Championships in 2014, the second year in a row.Strzegom, Poland, is hosting the championships this year (August 27-30) and it is being held in Montelibretti, Italy, in 2016.Millstreet hosted the 2014 FEI European Championships for Ponies (Dressage, Eventing, Jumping). The venue will host its inaugural International Horse Trials (CIC3, 2 and 1 star level) from August 28-30, with the cross-country courses designed by Mike Etherington-Smith. Riders will be competing for a prize fund of over €25,000. In 2016, Millstreet will host the FEI European Jumping Championships for Young Riders, Juniors and Children on Horses.
Millstreet is a town in north County Cork with a population of about 1500. Its previous claim to fame was hosting the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993, which was held at the town’s large indoor equestrian centre. The contest was won by Ireland’s Niamh Kavanagh.
The town also hosts Millstreet Horse Show, Ireland’s largest annual equestrian event and the only CSI3* to be held here.
